Lois Wiederrecht-Finke
Lois Finke is an artist and
photographer living in New London,
Iowa. In 1996, she completed the
series of photographs featured in The
Blue Top Motel. She is a graduate of
Iowa State University and earned a
major in art at Iowa Wesleyan College.
Along with Mary Swander, a professor of English at Iowa
State University, and former owners of the Blue Top Motel;
Larry & Judy Smith, Lois published a tribute to the Blue Top
Motel in Coralville, Iowa. The Blue Top was considered a local
landmark in motoring history. Many family trips across the
country found home away from home at the Blue Top.
Remember family trips in the 1950's? Old fashion motor
courts with individual small cabins. The fun of choosing "just
the right one!"
For 53 years, the Blue Top was one of these fond
memories, until it closed on December 31, 1996. These four
Iowans celebrate the motel with photographs, stories, and
memories.
